A street vender in Russia was charging tourists to take pictures with his panda cub. People became concerned because the temperature was hot and there are strict laws concerning the capture of wild animals.
A spokesman for the local prosecutor's office said his team launched an investigation as soon as they heard reports and will press charges if the man is found to have any illegally obtained wild animals.
There is no law (so far) against disguising a puppy as a panda.
I first wrote about a panda-dog in November 2005. The dog named Columbo was a rescue dog in Japan, a mixed breed of Poodle and Maltese. He is a Maltipoo or a Poodletese.
He was rescued by a dog groomer who styled him like a panda.
Now it seems that Pandamaltipoo (?) Maltipoopanda (?) Poodlepandatese (?) dogs are turning up all over Asia.
The dogs are naturally white, but they are dyed with panda markings. The dye is a special dog dye that lasts for about a month. It also solves the problem of eye stain on white fur.
I don't know how harmless the dye is. As far as I know there is no licorice Kool-Aid. People should probably not be trying this at home.
