Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet at a summit conference next week with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Japanese government had planned to present Putin, widely known to like dogs more than people, with a male Akita. They had given him Yume, a female Akita, in 2012.
But for reasons known only to the Russians they have turned down the offer of a bridegroom to Yume.
Is this a simple misunderstanding or a diplomatic breach?
Is puppy love diplomacy obsolete?
