My partner will be attending the Olympics in Rio. I'm a little worried.

No more gathering places. It is sad when we have to fear getting together in large groups thinking we could be struck by violence. Will it ever end or is this just the beginning.

Yep, what a shame. The world is in such upheaval and there are so many stirring the pot to keep that upheaval in motion. Follow the money.

Have a fabulous day. ☺

Some countries do not have the infrastructure to host an Olympic Games. Plus we know from the past that money usually sways the Olympic committee. It is truly a shame. I have never been more pessimistic of an Olympics. You have to be over 50 to remember the horror of what happened in Munich. Praying this Olympics passes without incident.

Read the NYT story on this this morning for column research. Pretty bad indeed.

I will be (sadly) shocked if there isn't some terrorist event. So sad. I remember the LA Summer Olympics fondly; got to see many events, and the big freeway fears were unfounded. It was a simpler time, even so recently as that...

Linda

Like you I will be watching also. Good luck to everyone! EVERYONE!

The corruption there is so unbelievable. I read a really horrifying NY Times article about the water conditions there. If I was an athlete in ANY sort of water sport I would really think twice about going. It talked about all the money that has supposedly put in to fixing the sewage and water pollution problems - most of it syphoned off by corruption. Horrible.

But we do love to watch the Olympics - love to watch the athletes trying to achieve their dreams (whether that dream is to win or simply be there!). Hopefully all will go okay. Fingers crossed.

I hope it turns out ok after all this..

It's funny that you post about this. Someone shared something on Facebook about the IOC and a special that aired on HBO. After watching it he was very anti-Olympics.

I will watch them, but not like I have in years past. There is too much corruption, too much displacement and too much waste (IMO) for my tastes, but I do love the athletes and I love hearing their stories.

Truth is, I don't follow the Olympics with the enthusiasm of years past. I hope that there's no remake of the Munich games, but, with the world in such turmoil, Rio doesn't fill me with high expectations that they could prevent such an attack.

Barring terrorism, my daughter rowed in high school and college, and she would get soaked every time she was in one of the boats. Rowing in raw sewage??? Seriously, whose bright idea was this Rio Olympics? Following their logic, maybe a future game in Eritrea should be next.

jansfunnyfarm

It does not sound like a fun place to be. Wonder how the athletes feel about competing there - worried, fearful ...?
