Production is expected to start in 2016 after an investment of 200 million yuan ($31 million) The facility will include a cloning production line, a cloned animal center, a gene bank, and a science and education exhibition hall.
The first cloning will be Japanese cows in order to lower the price of high quality beef in the Chinese market. There is some question about eating cloned animals, especially coming from a country with a poor record for food safety. They also plan to clone race horses, non-human primates, dogs and other animals.
For a mere $100,000 and a tissue sample anyone can get a genetic copy of a beloved pet, but the results have often not been what the owner had hoped for.
Investors in the early part of the century thought they had a gold mine from breeders of show dogs and race horses, but those breeders were more interested in producing a better animal, not taking a risk on a clone which might be inferior.
But they didn’t look or act alike.
Rainbow, a white cat with orange mixed with patches of black, is a calico, while CC with stripes and no orange coloring at all is a tiger tabby.
Rainbow’s body type is softly plump while CC is sleek and slender. People who took care of them noted that their mannerisms and behavior were very different. Uterus and environmental conditions can never be the same.
Besides using cloning technologies for beef cattle and dogs, the new cloning factory will be the world’s only institution to produce “disease models” of larger animals.
A “disease model” is an animal that is genetically engineered to be predisposed to a certain human disease for research purposes. BGI, a cloning company in Shenzhen, produces 500 cloned pigs a year, as “disease models” to test new medicine. Source
