the small farm farmers are going out of business, because of the big farm corps buying them up..sucks.

Thank you for your kind words and your understanding of the farming world!

Well said. I, too, follow Marianne and find her words very 'right on'. Thanks to you for understanding the way of the land!

Whilst I appreciate what farmers do, there are some forms of raising farm animals that noone should be happy with. For instance, caged chickens for eggs. I would much prefer to have my own chickens but unfortunately city regulations forbid me from doing that, so I buy non-cage eggs which taste heaps better anyway.

I think HSUS sounds totally unethical in their own operations and that is the problem. I don't think there is a problem with discussing our methods of producing food though!

Funny thing about vegans is that they are only afforded their lifestyle by "dirty" resources like oil.

All those lovely fruits, nuts, veggies and exotic grains have to come from somewhere when they are out of season locally. How many gallons of oil does it take to transport produce from South America to the US and Canada? I don't think that the vegan way of life is environmentally friendly at all.

And let's not forget the millions of tiny animals and birds that die in planting and harvesting the fruit, vegetables, and nuts for the vegan cause.

One thing that makes farm policy tough is the massive difference between huge corporate farms and family farms. They're very different organisms and we can't write laws that treat them both the same.

Many good points in this post, Jan. Food for thought.

What Pamela said!

Oh they won't be eating tofu either because they will fear it is "genetically altered"! They'd rather not go find out what that means and have more starving people in the world....

You are right it was very well said!

Very good points. The only issue I have with farming is all the subsidies they get from Washington. Take off the regulations and let the market dictate. I realize there may be years that are not as good as others, but that is true for any business. The other thing that tptb need to deal with is the terrible inheritance taxes that prevent family owned farms from staying within a family.

My hat goes off to all the small farmers out there trying to make an honest living and caring for their animals in a humane way. But I must admit that the growing trend of industrial corporate farms scares the bejesus out of me. I am not Vegan... but I am a vegetarian. Corporate farming is just one of the reasons why.
