Researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden believe that wolves evolved into domestic dogs by hanging around pre-historic human settlements eating the garbage. After 33,000 years today’s dogs possess genes for digesting carbohydrates and can thrive quite nicely eating a diet of human food. Source
Some implications of this research may be:
- Dogs love pizza
- Dogs prefer the garbage can to premium dog food
- Some dogs eat broccoli; others don’t
- Some human food makes dogs sick
- Dogs are beggars and scavengers
- Some dogs get fat
Obviously further academic study is needed.
Your (and Sweden's) tax dollars at work.

Ha ha. I love scientific studies like this one. Next thing you'll know, they'll prove that dogs can drink water too.

So many studies tell us what everyone knows or what no one believes.

So much for the raw feeding theory...

I'm in the wrong business if they are getting paid to tell us these things!

LOL thanks for the commentary. I, too, thought the buzz about this latest "breakthrough" finding was rather disproportionate to the duh-ness of it all.

You left out, "some dogs eat horse manure in the barn when they are supposed to be doing agility". It's disgusting. Seriously...

That is pretty darn amazing! Some humans are carbohydrate intolerant and yet here there are dogs that evolved tolerance in a shorter time span!

Well whaddya know? Millions of dogs are feeling smugly vindicated at this moment.

I used to be able to find good information from your blog posts.

I'm afraid you are wrong about that. I totally avoid writing about what to feed a dog.

Some of the studies [paid for by tax dollars] really make you go WTF.

Feed your dog scraps with the utmost care. Most meats are safe as dogs are naturally carnivorous. But scraps should never make up more than 10% of your dog's diet. In general, human foods are dangerous to dogs because their metabolism is different. Some human foods only cause your dog mild irritation and digestive upset, whereas others can lead to serious illness and death. Thanks.

dogs might but Dexter don't.

Seriously? I think they should conduct further study about it. Or at least provide a list of human foods that dog can digest. Dogs life is not a joke.
