Memorizing lines and having stunt doubles doesn’t necessarily qualify as macho, IMO, but we want to celebrate actors who are secure enough in their manhood to love little dogs.
These are men who don’t insist on being photographed with the obligatory Bulldog or Rottweiler after alerting the paparazzi where they will be walking. And they aren’t put off by weenie male columnists making fun of their purse dogs.
Orlando Bloom and Frankie
Orlando Bloom is best known for action roles in Lord of the Rings, Blackhawk Down, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
When he was 21 he fell from a three-story building and broke his back. It was feared he would never walk again, but twelve days later he walked out of the hospital.
Since then he has broken his ribs, his nose, both his legs, his arm, his wrist, a finger and a toe and cracked his skull three times.
This is possibly more accident prone than macho.
Jeremy Renner and Frenchie
" Known for his badass roles as an army sergeant, a vampire, a gun toter and a serial killer, Jeremy recently showed up on the New York set of The Bourne Legacy accompanied by his tiny dog.
And some idiot journalist wrote:
However, his macho appearance was ruined by his tiny French bulldog, who trotted along faithfully in front of his master.
"Ruined"? We say "enhanced" and "master"? Who writes "master" today? Moron
We are quite sure that the bag someone is carrying has nothing to do with the needs of the dog.
Josh Duhamel and Zoey
Josh Duhamel cradles his Dachshund, Zoey after picking her up from an animal hospital
Josh Duhamel started his show business career as a less-than- macho fashion model and moved to a recurring role on a soap opera.
He is best known today for his role as Captain William Lennox in Transformers and the sequels, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
In 2009 he drove the official pace car at the Indianapolis 500 which won my undying envy.
Ewan McGregor and Poodle
Scottish actor Ewan McGregor distinguished himself in early films for taking off his clothes. But he seems to have moved on from that.
To prepare for his role in Blackhawk Down, he trained with real life Rangers in Georgia.
He became an expert swordsman to prepare for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the three Star Wars prequels.
In a recent TV documentary Trips Money Can’t Buy, he spent ten days trekking through jungles in Central America and Honduras, surviving on insects and anything else edible.
Andrew Garfield and Spidey
After beating out fierce competition, Andrew Garfield was chosen to play the young Peter Parker in the Spiderman reboot to be released in July.
Which raises the question: Can a man who wears spandex be considered macho?
True, the spandex is an iconic costume worn by an iconic crime fighter, but still…
No matter, Andrew is cute as a bug and secure enough in his manhood to walk a little dog. The dog looks like he has attitude to spare.

To me they look really sexy and masculine with their little dogs. I'm a bigger fan of all of them after seeing this blog.

I wasn't previously as fan of any of these guys but I may have to give them another glace now. I love the photo with the dog in the bicycle basket. No macho hang-ups there!

Only know of Orlando and Ewan, but I cast no aspertions on any man with a little dog. I think it's sweet that they have a tender side.
Mr. Cube and I only have large dogs, but you should see him with my niece's 4 pound chihuahua... he's wrapped around her little paw.

That was brillant! We loved reading about all those actors and their dogs!

What's even better about these little dogs is what great shape they're in. So many people who have little dogs don't exercise them like real dogs and they get chunky and unhealthy. These dogs looks like they're out and about for more than photo ops. Good deal.
Great series, Jan. It's been fun seeing how many pix you come up with.

I've always loved Orlando Bloom (well...who wouldn't?) and now I have another reason!

This is awesome Jan! I learned a whole lot more than just the title! Orlando Bloom has broken a lot of bones! Holy cow!
I love men who are comfortable with little dogs. And, the reporter who said Jeremy Renner's appearance was marred by his French Bulldog is an idiot. They are really awesome dogs.
Thanks for writing a fun and interesting piece!
