At the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, rookie JR Hildebrand was one turn away from winning the race when he crashed into the wall.
I’m going to win. I’m winning.
I can taste the milk.
Oh, crap.
An estimated 300,000 people at the Speedway gasped in disbelief as did millions more watching on TV. It was a finish that will never be forgotten.
Pulling defeat from the jaws of certain victory can be expressed in one word: hildebrand.
He didn’t get the job because at the last minute
he pulled a hildebrand.
Be careful that you don’t do a hildebrand.
The dog was doing great in [agility/ conformation/ performance/ field trial/ competition] until the owner pulled a hildebrand.
Is there any one among us who hasn’t done a hildebrand?

I didn't see the race but my brother-in-law told me about it. At least he finished in the top three (second I think I heard).
Reminds me of a Detroit Tiger pitcher who last year had a perfect game until the ump (admittedly) blew a call at first base that would have been the final out. Hard to take.

That turned out to be a great human story. The pitcher
accepted the tearful apology with grace and class as I remember. Even umpires
can pull a hildebrand in calling games. But it’s still better than having
machines call the game.

I didn't see the race but I totally sympathise with the feeling! Shiva and I have often come so close to agility glory and then I pulled a hildebrand, I guess, and celebrated too early or took my eye off her too soon... Disaster ensued.
This is kind of funny and kind of sad. But it is very good to know I am not alone!
