Not surprisingly Stacey Champion failed to
post bond by the deadline so Guess, the 4-month-old Poodle-Schnauzer puppy she tried to mail, will go up for adoption today.
According a city of Minneapolis news release:
…an in-person drawing will be held around 2 p.m. CT Friday at the Minneapolis Animal Care and Control shelter. About 10 names will be chosen and numbered off. Those selected will undergo screening, and the first name drawn and determined eligible can take the puppy home after a routine adoption procedure.
I see the wisdom here. Interested people will show up, having made a commitment to adopt a puppy. If they aren’t among the chosen, they will find themselves at the shelter where there are many less famous, but equally deserving, lovely dogs who need homes.
Those people who are merely celebrity hounds will be screened out.
UPDATE: Nearly 50 people showed up at the animal shelter for the puppy drawing yesterday. Terri Ford, an unemployed Minneapolis woman, won the Guess Lottery.
Probably because of all the attention, shelter officials announced that ten pets were a adopted last week while usually only one or two are adopted per week this time of year.Six more were adopted after the drawing yesterday.

I'm glad they are vetting the prospective bidders. With that in place, this sounds like an excellent solution!

But..........but.........unemployed?!?!
Shouldn't financial resposibilty be required to adopt?!?! I know, anyone could lose there job at anytime, but I think being employed at the time of adoption would be a requirement. Of course, the story doesn't say if she has the means to provide for the dog she just adopted...so maybe I'm out of line.

That bothered me too. Also in a later story I read she confessed that her landlord didn't know about this. Our city shelter requires the person to be a home owner or have written permission from the landlord. I don't think you are out of line at all. If it doesn't work out, the person who was drawn second wanted to give the puppy to the son in Georgia. What a great idea.

Some shelters require that you have the landlord's permission and be employed. This poor pup has been through too much already. I hope this woman holds up her agreement to care for this cute little pup.
