Following her ancient instincts to chase rodents underground, Emma a 2-year-old wiener dog chased a creature under a 20-foot embankment of rock and gravel at a park near Lake Michigan.
But then she got stuck.
What might have been a simple rescue of coaxing Emma from beneath the underground rock gaps turned into a community rescue party involving a backhoe, Rollie’s Rotor Rooter, chisels, underground camera cables, a jackhammer and plenty of persuasive dog treats.
“You could see her nose and even touch her, but she was wedged in a hole with a rock preventing us from getting her out from the angle we were digging,’’ said [owner] Debbie Skubal, who also tried her luck grabbing the dog. “She was so scared, she pulled back whenever I got near her.’’
You could hear the dog occasionally whimper during the 2½-day ordeal. Also saving Emma was the mild daytime temperatures in the mid-40s and only dipping slightly at night under a persistent shoreline fog. Source
Finally she was freed when a jackhammer broke up the rock that was imprisoning her. A rescuer, Dave Rohr, kneeling in a cave-like entrance six feet below ground was able to get his finger around her collar and pull her out of the hole.
A quick lateral to owner Tom Skubal kneeling behind him and cheers rang out as she was finally brought to safety.
People coming together out of the goodness of their hearts to rescue an errant little dog--this is a good story to start out a new year.
