Fire fighter Chris Tillman and Sammy discuss the recent rescue
Mary Gier, 69, of Boston had let her dog off leash to do some exploring as she often does. But Sammy, a 10-year-old Norwegian Elkhound, got stuck on a ledge about 12 inches wide and 15 feet from the rocks below.
Gier then did what most of us would do even though it isn't the wisest course of action. She climbed down on the ledge to reassure Sammy, but she knew she couldn’t lift the 60-pound dog.
“I wasn’t going to leave him,” Gier said. “I could move, but he couldn’t.”
A bystander called the fire department and they immediately showed up to pull Gier to safety. Fire fighter Chris Tillman climbed down and lifted Sammy back to the pier. Gier and Sammy had spent about 40 minutes stuck on the ledge.
The same day of the rescue the fire department had accepted a donation of 60 pet oxygen masks. More and more fire departments across the country are outfitting their trucks with these lifesaving devices. Because of tight city budgets many of these must be purchased with contributions.
To show her gratitude, Gier donated money to buy more masks. The story

The other day our fire department got to come to our house and deal with a rattlesnake. I'm sure that was fun for them.
