Police and rescue workers never know what kind of day they are going to have when they start their shifts.
In Suffolk County, NY. neighbors, police and rescue workers came together to rescue a blind 13-year-old Poodle who had fallen 12 to 18 feet into a muddy drain during a July 4th celebration.
A police officer and several neighbors pried open a 150 pound lid to the storm drain allowing emergency services workers to scoop up the dog with a pole attached to a large net and raise her to the surface.
Within an hour Maggie was back with her owner, Patricia Fogarty, 69, all wagging her tail and eating her dinner, apparently none the worse for the experience. Fogarty praised the rescuers and the civilian neighbors.
"They showed good American spirit," she said. The story
Meanwhile, police in Germany were called to a house by neighbors who had been disturbed by a howling dog for hours. Convinced that they were going to have to deal with an animal cruelty case, they made the landlord open the door.
What they found instead of a frightened dog being tortured was a perfectly healthy, but apparently very bored, parrot howling away. To make matters worse, when one of the policemen reached toward the parrot in a friendly gesture, the bird gave him a nasty bite on the finger. The story

We are so glad the blind poodle was rescued without injury! And also glad the tortured dog was actually a bored parrot. Wonder how they stopped it from howling, though?
