On May 13, Bear, a Chicago police dog got spooked by thunder, jumped a six foot fence and was off on an adventure.
Apparently he had such a good time that he’s done it again. A BOL went out Saturday as Bear went missing from the backyard of his handler, Detective Richard King.
Bear, a 74-pound black and tan German Shepherd, is trained to track, do search and rescue and search property, but apparently not to stay home.
I suggested the first time that Bear might be given a desk job since he is terrified of thunder. But this time the motive for running away might be jealousy. King has another dog, a retired police dog named Deny, and the two dogs don’t get along, maybe because Bear gets to spend his days fighting crime and Deny has to stay home.
This living arrangement seems strained to me. There is bound to be a little alpha dog thing going on there.
Chicago police are asking anyone with information to call 911.The story

That's funny! I hope he comes back!

I can easily see Lucky taking off like that during Thunderstorms. Especially when he was young. We have had so many storms lately I believe he's almost grown accustomed to them, yet he still cowers and presses against us.
But then, Lucky isn't a trained police dog, either. Just thinking a refresher course for Bear might be good, at least until they find out if he can still take the sound of gunshots without running...

We sure hope that Bear makes it home safely...
A desk job might be a good time out for a bit..

Oh I hope Bear comes home safely! I totally get it with the fear of thunder! (It's me that is afraid, not the pets!) And... it's thundering here as we speak. Yikes!!!

there is a term for a certain type of dog..they are called runners..no matter the fence, no matter the home, no matter what..they dog will get out and run...i had a great dane that was a runner..he found me..stayed with me for about 6 months and then he started to take off..finally a guy that worked for the city took him as he lived out in the country and could run all he wanted to...after 3 months..he left and moved across the road..just never went back over there..(the new place let him sleep in the house like i did) and he stayed there for about 8 months and then one day, he ran off and no ones seen him since..i figure he's probably in chicago and fixing to bolt again..ha

My dog-niece, Pumpkin, a pit-mix, has developed a fear of thunder recently that is so bad, she is hesitant to leave her house. My sister doesn't know what to do with her. I would suggest a housecall from Cesar, but I'm sure that's pretty pricey.
Pumpkin stayed at our house this weekend while my sister & brother-in-law went out of town, and she was just fine, but I think it was because she was going along with Elke, our German shepherd. Unlike the dogs in your post, Pumpkin & Elke get along very well.
