If you suspect there is a drug problem in your home, one course of action is to hire a private dog sniffing company.
Here’s how it works: you set up an appointment with the professional handler at a time when you are at home alone. The handler and a friendly, intelligent sniff dog will do a room-to-room and automobile search.
If the dog picks up a scent of a drug, they are trained to sit as the handler marks the spot. The dogs will not seek out drugs in hidden locations or dispose of them. The handler will not document the results will so that it is all completely confidential. The dogs are trained to identify a variety of illegal drugs. If they pick up a scent, they aren’t trained to distinguish whether it is a small amount, (one joint for example) or a large amount (what a dealer might have on hand).
Keep in mind also that their noses are so sensitive that they can often tell when a drug has been in a pocket or backpack even if it is no longer there. You are the only one who will know after the dog and handler have left the premises and you have made a search.
These firms are not connected with any law enforcement or government agency. In California and probably most other states, police don't bring “narc” dogs on campus to search out drugs in students’ backpacks, jackets and lockers. However, some school systems hire private firms to bring in dogs on a regular basis as a deterrent to having drugs on campus.
Obviously no arrests can be made if a student is in possession of drugs. Parents of those students are called and must come and take the child home.
Which may be where they got the drugs in the first place.

Interesting, but I hope I never need anything like this service.

I never knew that you could hire a drug sniffing Dog.
Um, that didn't come out right at all!
Not sure if this is a good idea or a total invasion of privacy. I guess it depends on parents being responsible and only taking such actions if they believe there is a real problem or concern.
My Dogs, they would just head straight for the sock drawer. And that is ONLY because there are socks in it!

Our neighbors were drug dealers and they had a dog that warned them when a Narc was coming.

I've not heard of such services. Really interesting though.

When I worked at a grooming salon we used to bathe some of the local police dogs. One of them, Oscar, insisted on checking the entire salon thoroughly before we could put him in a kennel. My boss said her proudest moment as a parent was when he came in while her son was there. She had been suspecting the kid for a while, but Oscar sniffed him up and down and moved on. She's never had an employee with substance abuse problems!

Don't ask the question (or hire the dog) if you don't want, or are not prepared, to deal with the answer.

One of my best friends in school had a father that was a drug dog handler. That poor creature. (One confused dog at home...)
It also once ate about a pound of pot it found at the nearby airport, apparently, and was off duty for more than a week. We all thought that was completely hilarious. :D I'm not saying we had the giggles at the time or anything, but...

I must admit to finding this very interesting and once more feeling very relieved that all my kids are grown. Being a parent is never easy.

I can see that coming in handy for a lot of people. I hope that if I have kids I won't need to use a dog to figure out if they are lying to me. But still, I could see the temptation there for a lot of parents. I bet it's not cheap to hire one of these sniffers!
