There now seems to be a question whether the pitbull puppy or the uncaged ferret chewed four toes of a Louisiana baby while her parents slept.
The month-old baby girl was injured Dec. 10 while her parents, Christopher and Mary Hansche, were asleep. They were awakened by the baby's cries, they said. The husband blamed the dog but the wife is sure it was the ferret.
The parents were jailed for child desertion and criminal negligence and remain in jail in lieu of $50,000 bond each. No matter which pet was involved, the charges will remain because the baby was “injured by an animal while in the custody of the parents.”
The baby has been released from the hospital and is in state custody. Meanwhile the state is waiting for the results of a drug hair analysis on the parents.

Parents of 1 month old babies barely sleep let alone sleep through that.

I remember hearing about this story but I never read any reports. Was the baby left to sleep on the floor?

Truly an unfortunate incident. Poor little child. I can't help but feel a little bad for the ferret and the puppy also.

Having owned a ferret I'd definitely believe that a ferret chewed off the toes before the dog did. Ferrets are known to chew little squirmy things and nip at feet and hands so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to find out that something like this could happen. Irresponsible pet owners should be held responsible for things like this, not the pets in my opinion.
The parents let the ferret roam around uncaged while they left the baby to "sleep" in a baby carrier on the floor while they passed out in what I'm sure was a drug induced coma.
