It all started when Steve Bartlett of Hamilton, Ontario took Rosie, one of his cats, down the street to the pet store to visit Coco and Baxter, the store cats, and to buy cat food. Steve has five cats and is foster parent to a mother and her litter, so he was a regular customer. In fact, he had bought Rosie there the year before.
Since it was near closing time, two Eskipoo puppies (breeding of a miniature Poodle and an American Eskimo) were running around the store with the cats. One of the puppies came up to Rosie who started licking her.
Steve describes the scene:
"The Eskipoo puppy promptly rolled over on its back, and Rosie kept licking and purring. Then the puppy started batting at Rosie's nose, and the game was on. The two of them spent about ten minutes chasing each other around the store.
"Needless to say, I was hooked. Besides, Rosie, being the youngest and the only female cat, owns my house, so I figured if this puppy was good enough for her, it was good enough for me. I went back and got her the following morning.
“Lisa has been remarkably good. I've hired a professional dog trainer, Tony Harper, because I've never had a dog before and his advice and techniques have been exceptionally good. He does get annoyed with me because I'm not so keen on the "formal" obedience stuff (like "sit", "stay", "down" -- I feel like a Nazi when I bark out orders), but I have put a lot of work into socializing her so that I can take her anywhere she's allowed to go.
“She doesn't get nervous although she spent 10 minutes in a grocery cart before she learned not to bark at it, and is excellent around people, particularly small children, which is surprising to me.
“She's not "excitable" like most small dogs I've experienced; she doesn't bark at all unless she's playing with the cats and gets "wound up" a bit too much. At which point I put her in the laundry basket.
“When I got Rosie almost a year ago I started taking her to the pub with me, and she still loves to go (she has her own bar stool), so naturally I had to take Lisa as well. As you can see from the picture, she has a good time also.
“The kittens in the pictures are ones I'm fostering. The mother cat lets her play with them.“
Thanks, Steve, for the email and pictures, sharing the delightful story of your Eskipoo puppy.
As a dog owner, Steve seems to be doing everything right. He purchased his Eskipoo from someone he knew and trusted, we can see that she'll never be lonely, and he got professional advice to train her to become a good little citizen.
See Lisa the Eskipoo all grown up,

What an adorable dog. Looks like she is the foster mother of the puppies.

Wouldn't it be great if all dog owners were like Steve? Now if he just has her spayed so there will be no little Eski-Eskipoos around.

I don't live in Canada. Where can I find this adorable dog in Arkansas?

Thank you for the compliments -- you'll be glad to know Lisa just graduated "puppy school" with Tony. She had her final exam in the pub. Also, I will be having her spayed; probably around the end of May. The major training task I have now is getting her accustomed to staying with my friend Paul, who has offered to look after her any time I go away on holiday. She likes Paul a lot, but still cries a lot when I leave her there (so far it's only been for a couple of hours max). I'm not planning any trips in the near future, so I'll just persevere and hope she "gets it" eventually!

Well, I've been taking care of a couple of cats lately, for about a couple of weeks. It was great fun, even having a cat jump up and down on me while I was trying to sleep. I found that to get the cats to behave I had to split my affections fairly equally, even though one of the two was much more aggressive in her demands for said affection. I won't miss trying to read my computer screen or pages of a book while trying to peer around a kitten's face. But the apartment feels a little emptier.
